Irish one-handed sword with circular pommel, including scabbard, 16th century

This one-handed sword is based on various surviving original finds and 16th-century depictions of kerns (ceithern), the light infantrymen who formed the main part of Irish armies in the late medieval and Renaissance periods. These Gaelic warriors, mostly mercenaries, were renowned for their intrepidity in many conflicts throughout the British Isles.

One of their favourite weapons was a sword with a broad blade and a distinctive circular pommel through which the end of the blade's tang passed. This unique open circular pommel was typical of Irish swords of the 15th and 16th centuries. Many surviving originals of this type have been found during archaeological excavations throughout Ireland and can now be admired in various museums, including the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

This affordable replica of the iconic Irish-Gaelic round hilt sword has a wide, double-edged blade of EN45 spring steel, fitted with a groove about two-thirds of its length. The blade is not sharpened and the full tang of the blade is threaded into the pommel. The blade consists of an approximately 19 cm long guard with axially curved arms, a wooden handle wrapped tightly with black leather and a solid round pommel.

This beautiful piece of Irish history comes complete with a black wood and leather scabbard with a square finial, fitted with a steel collar and finial.

This late medieval/renaissance one-handed sword is intended as a collector's or decorative piece. In addition to its value to collectors, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, for example to complement a historical costume, and will perfectly accentuate your transformation into a proud Irish warrior. Not intended for fencing.
