A replica of the Irish war axe used by the Scottish mercenaries known as Gallowglass (also Galloglass). These heavily armed warriors came from the Highlands and the Hebrides, from where they were recruited to Ireland from the 13th century onwards, particularly in the service of the powerful Gaelic clans. They were known for their tenacity in battle, physical strength and loyalty to their masters.
The Gallowglass fought mostly on foot and formed the core of the elite units. Their main weaponry was large, long-handled war axes, designed for crushing blows against infantry and cavalry. They also used claymore-type swords, dirk daggers, skeans and sometimes spears. To protect their bodies, they wore chain mail, iron helmets and thick cloaks of wool.
In the 16th century, a new group of mercenaries, nicknamed Redshanks (red legs), appeared among them. These warriors, often descended from Highland clans, fought barefoot or in red breeches, and continued the tradition of the Galloglass, although their armour was lighter and adapted to fast ambushes.
