Medieval badge - Knight on horseback (tournament badge)
England, first half of the 14th century
Brass cast. Dimensions: 60 × 50 mm
This badge depicts a knight in full armour on horseback and is a typical example of ' tournament badges ' - small decorative items issued or sold on the occasion of jousting tournaments. They could be worn as a memento of the event, a sign of belonging to a tournament team, or an expression of admiration for a particular knight.
In the 14th century, tournaments were not only a military exercise, but also a social and political event that attracted the nobility and the general public. The tournament badge could therefore serve a similar function to today's sporting or commemorative medals - it was both a prestigious souvenir and a sign of loyalty and status.
The detailed design of the knight and horse reflects the importance of the warrior as the ideal of the medieval man - brave, virtuous and devoted to his lord and his faith. Tournament badges were often worn on the garment, hat or belt.
