The date of the shield is around 1450, probably Chomutov, Bohemia. Original material was: wood, leather, chalk, silver foil, polychrome.
Shields of this type were used by cusins and other infantrymen in Central Europe during the 15th century. This specimen is decorated in the middle with a crown with three ostrich feathers, the emblem of Bohemian kings. Below it is the letter Y on a shining cloud, probably a monogram of the name Yhesus (Jesus). At the top is the coat of arms of the Saxon town of Zwickau (a red shield with three white swans), which was added to the shield later.
