A medieval pilgrim’s badge in the shape of a crossbow. The Netherlands, 1350–1450. Based on the book by Jose Kolderweij, *Sieraad en devotie in middeleeuws Vlaanderen*.

Medieval pilgrims used these badges as mementos of the sacred sites they had visited and as tangible proof of their pilgrimage. Individual pilgrimage sites had their own distinctive badges, so it was possible to tell which places a pilgrim had visited by the badges on their clothing.

In addition to pilgrimage badges, there were also so-called secular badges, which could be associated with a ruler or noble and were distributed to courtiers, servants, or supporters. There were also badges commemorating significant events.
