- Medieval pilgrimage badge with a monkey doctor
This medieval pilgrim brooch was made from a find from Salisbury, England, and depicts the so-called Monkey Doctor.
There are several finds of medieval pilgrim brooches depicting a monkey doctor standing on a fish with a mallet and urinating into a mortar.
Sticks and mortars for crushing various ingredients were among the tools of medieval physicians and apothecaries, and the examination of urine was an integral part of medieval diagnostics.
The medieval pilgrim plaque measures 4 x 3 cm. On the back there is a fixed pin for attaching to clothing. Bronze.
