Silver pendant – Fern, with a faceted moldavite.

This piece of jewelry was designed by the South Bohemian artist Kati, who comes from a region surrounded by moldavites. Moldavites are named after the Vltava River (Moldau in German), which rises in the forested Šumava Mountains (called Gabreta by the Celts). The set Czech moldavite symbolizes the source of the Vltava – a small spring surrounded by ferns, where everything begins.

This river has been a bearer of life across much of Bohemia, including Prague, since ancient times.

The name comes from the Germanic compound “Wilth-ahwa,” meaning “wild, rushing water.” The Germanic tribes likely adopted the name from the Celts, who inhabited the river basin in antiquity, and later it was taken over by the Slavs. This piece of jewelry thus also symbolizes cycles and the interconnectedness of Central Europe.

Moldavite is an exceptionally rare tektite formed approximately 15 million years ago during the impact of a massive meteorite in what is now Bavaria. Fragments of molten rock were ejected by pressure and heat as far as South Bohemia and Moravia, where deposits of this green stone of cosmic origin gradually formed. Its color ranges from light bottle green to deep emerald, always carrying a mysterious luster. Moldavite is valued worldwide.

Moldavites are prized not only for their rarity – their sources are rapidly diminishing – but also for the traditions associated with them. It is said, for example, that Winston Churchill carried a moldavite in his pocket for luck, and in South Bohemia it is customary to gift this stone to women as a symbol of love and protection.

Fern has a strong connection in mythology and symbolism with mystery, protection and hidden knowledge. In Slavic tradition, it is associated with the legend of the “fern flower,” which is said to bloom on Midsummer Night and bring luck, wealth, and the ability to understand hidden things. Fern is also a symbol of renewal and endurance, as it grows even in harsh conditions and unfolds in a spiral, reminiscent of the cycles of life. In Celtic symbolism, it represents protection against evil forces and a connection to nature. It is often seen as a plant between worlds, linking the visible and invisible realms.
