SPQR is an abbreviation of the Latin term Senatus Populusque Romanus, meaning the Senate and the People of Rome. This symbol represented the authority and sovereignty of the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire. The abbreviation SPQR was used on Roman military standards, public buildings, coins and official documents. It symbolized the unity between the Senate, which represented the elite, and the people, i.e. the population of Rome. The SPQR reflected the political structure of Rome and its ideal of the rule of law and republican polity. To this day, the SPQR is used as a historical symbol and reference to Roman heritage, for example in the emblem of the city of Rome.
