Tryzub, or trident, has its roots in the early medieval history of Kievan Rus.
It appears as early as the 10th century on the seals, coins and banners of Prince Volodymyr the Great (reigned 980-1015), who used it as his family emblem. This symbol became the emblem of the Rurikov dynasty and was spread throughout the territory of the then Russia, from Kiev to Novgorod.
In the Middle Ages, the Tryzub had not only political but also spiritual significance. According to some interpretations, it represented a stylized falcon swooping down to earth. After the collapse of Kievan Rus', the symbol gradually fell out of use, but has remained preserved in archaeological finds and chronicles as a reference to the glorious era of medieval Ukrainian statehood.
