Scandinavian sword from the Vendel period with brass hilt, including scabbard
This magnificent sword from the Vendelian period is inspired by a richly decorated and meticulously crafted archaeological find that was uncovered in a ship grave at a burial site near Uppsala , Sweden. Due to its detailed design, the original historical piece is considered a prestigious weapon of a Swedish chieftain, nobleman or elite warrior from the 7th-8th centuries. Many of the finds attributed to the Vendelian period (which bridges the Migration of Nations and the Viking Age in Swedish history) attest to the exceptionally high level of craftsmanship of the time.
The shape of the sword is a classic Nordic one-handed sword. The double-edged blade with a wide groove is forged from EN45 spring steel. The blade is not sharpened and the full tang of the blade is riveted into the pommel.
The guard, measuring approx. 9 cm long and 1.5 cm thick, and the generously shaped pommel are cast in brass and faithfully reproduce the richly decorated engraved motifs and patterns of the original artefact. As with many original pieces from this period, the pommel is composed of several parts joined by rivets. The top of the pommel is set with red enamel, which imitates real garnets. The handle has a wooden core covered with brown leather.
This one-handed Vendel sword comes with a brown wood and leather scabbard, fitted with a wooden sling (max. belt width 5 cm) and a brass collar, and finished with electroplated.
The sword is designed as a collector's or decorative exhibit and, in addition to its value to collectors, it is also well suited as a prop, for example to complement a historical costume. It is not intended for fencing.
