Birka was an important Viking trading and cultural site that existed in the 9th and 10th centuries on the island of Björkö in Sweden. It was situated on Lake Mälaren, which gave it a convenient strategic location for trade links with Scandinavia, Europe and further afield, including the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world.
Birka served as one of the first cities in Scandinavia and was an important centre of Viking culture. It was a key hub for trade in furs, iron, silver and luxury goods such as jewellery and cloth. The port attracted merchants from all over Europe and the Arab world, making Birka a multicultural and prosperous settlement.
The city also had an important spiritual role, with the missionary Ansgar being sent here to spread Christianity among the Vikings. Archaeological finds include graves, silver jewellery and weapons, providing a valuable insight into Viking life.
