The obverse of the coin features a distinctive male head with rich hair and beard, traditionally associated with a mythological figure or deity associated with fertility, the underworld or Dionysian symbolism. The sculpted portrait in deep relief stands out for its detailed modelling of facial features and hair texture, reflecting the style of ancient Greek coin art.
The reverse depicts a griffin - a mythical creature combining the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. The figure is depicted in motion and accompanied by Greek letters that refer to the original coins of Panticapaia. The griffin was a symbol of strength, vigilance and divine protection in antiquity and became one of the main emblems of the urban currency of the Bosporan Empire.
The whole composition is based on the historical models of the ancient staters.
