In TheEagle of the Ninth Legion(2011), Roman officer Marcus Aquila and his slave, later friend Esca, find themselves in the wilds of Great Britain. In search of the lost Eagle Battalion of the Ninth Legion, they venture deep into the Caledonian tribal areas north of Hadrian's Wall.
This official gladius is a detailed replica of the sword used by Marcus Aquila in the film. The hardened carbon steel blade tapers from the crossguard to a sort of waist, then widens again before the tip. This style of blade was named after the German city ofMainz, where it was discovered, and is the finest variant of the Roman gladius sword. The leaf-shaped blade from Mainz was sturdier, heavier and better balanced than the Pompeii and Hispanicum styles. Officers, including Aquila, were particularly equipped with this type of gladius.
You can tell from the elaborate decoration of Aquila's gladius that this is no ordinary legionary sword. The heavy ellipsoidal pommel and crossguard are decorated with delicate floral and eagle motifs. The beautifully textured wood has been shaped on the lathe for an ergonomic grip. The scabbard made of wood covered with black leather is decorated with richly decorated metal plates. The relief on the top plate shows a ruler surrounded by soldiers and the bottom of the scabbard depicts a legionary standing in front of a Roman temple. The floral motif continues on a third plate attached below the top of the scabbard. The leather strap is attached to the scabbard by metal rings.
