Petty Knife – Traditional Japanese Utility Knife
The Petty is a traditional Japanese kitchen knife designed for precise and delicate kitchen tasks. Its shape resembles a European paring knife, but it is longer, slimmer, and lighter. It is ideal for peeling, slicing fruit and vegetables, preparing herbs, trimming small cuts of meat, and many other everyday tasks that require maximum precision.
One of the greatest advantages of the Petty knife is its excellent manoeuvrability. The narrow, lightweight blade provides exceptional control, while the sharp tip makes detailed work and the preparation of small ingredients effortless. Thanks to its versatility, the Petty is often used alongside larger chef's knives such as the Gyuto or Santoku and is an indispensable tool in both professional and home kitchens.

Origin of the Petty Knife
The name Petty (ペティナイフ) is derived from the French word petit, meaning "small." Japanese knife makers adopted the term to describe a compact, versatile kitchen knife intended for delicate and precise work. Despite its French-derived name, the Petty has become an integral part of the modern Japanese kitchen and is now one of the most widely used knives for everyday food preparation. It is especially valued for its light weight, precision, and versatility.
