Karlštejn Castle was founded in 1348 by the Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a representative residence and a place for storing crown jewels and relics. It is located near Prague and is one of the most important Gothic monuments in the Czech Republic. The construction took place under the direction of the builder Matthias of Arras and later Petr Parléř. The castle is famous for its beautiful architecture and the Chapel of the Holy Cross, decorated with jewels and frescoes.

The Bohemian lion is based on the depiction of the Bohemian lion in the passional of the Abbess Kunhuta. Period of creation: 1313-1321.
