Karlstejn Castle - history, significance and interesting facts
Karlštejn Castle is one of the most important and most visited castles in the Czech Republic. It is located about 30 km southwest of Prague and was founded in 1348 by the Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a fortified residence and a place to preserve the crown jewels and relics of the Holy Roman Empire.
Karlštejn was built in the Gothic style and its architect was Matthias of Arras. The castle served not only as a residence, but above all as a vault for the most valuable treasures of the kingdom. The most important part of the castle is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, located in the Great Tower and decorated with unique panel paintings by the master Theodoric.
During the Hussite Wars, Karlštejn remained impregnable and was gradually rebuilt in Renaissance and Baroque style.
