Sword from the Royal Armoury IX.1106. This sword is part of the Royal Armouries collection by Windlass. The original dates from the mid to late 14th century and was found in Lake Constance on the border of Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

The sword has a fixed, tapering blade with a double-edged and straight edge ending in a sharp point. It has a sword-and-a-half handle, which allows for one or two-handed use, and a distinctive large wheel-shaped pommel. The blade has a simple flat diamond cross-section, while the pommel exhibits subtle and sophisticated shaping - the front and back surfaces are uniquely angled inward at the tip.

This type of sword was probably used by foot soldiers or knights, often one-handed on horseback or two-handed in ground combat. Swords of this type were widespread throughout Europe in the second half of the 14th century and were used by swordmasters such as Fiore dei Liberi or by soldiers in battles such as at Sempach in 1386. This sword is ideal for armour and half-swording techniques (gripping the blade with one hand), due to the strength and weight of the blade. Also, the heavy pommel could be used effectively in close combat.

The replica is made with a hand forged blade made of modern 1080 high carbon steel, which is fully hardened and taper ground for proper weight distribution.

The scabbard has a leather covered wooden core. The tip of the scabbard is reinforced with a brass tip with a traditional cutout, while at the throat the leather widens and overlaps part of the guard at the ricasso.

Manufactured by Windlass Steelcrafts, the original can be seen in the Royal Armouries under object number IX.1106.
