Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most famous and best-studied dinosaurs in the history of paleontology. This predator from the Late Cretaceous period, living approximately 68-66 million years ago, reached lengths of up to 12 metres and weighed over 8 tonnes. The first significant fossil find was made in 1902 in the US state of Montana by paleontologist Barnum Brown, who worked for the American Museum of Natural History. This discovery contributed significantly to the definition of the species and laid the foundations for its scientific description, which was published a few years later. With its powerful jaws and extremely strong bite, Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the top predators of its time. It became a symbol of palaeontology and the prehistoric world and is still the subject of intense research into its biology, behaviour and ecology.
