Vyšehrad Griffin – pendant.

The griffin motif originates from tile finds in the early Romanesque Basilica of St. Lawrence in Prague at Vyšehrad, founded in the 11th century by the first Czech king, Vratislav II.

The floor was composed of tiles depicting lions, sphinxes, busts of Emperor Nero, and also griffins.

The griffin combines the body of a lion with the head, wings, and talons of an eagle. This combination is not accidental, but carries a clearly defined symbolic meaning: the lion represents strength, courage, and royal power, while the eagle embodies vigilance, keen sight, and the spiritual principle.

In this sense, the griffin is a symbol of two spheres – the earthly and the celestial. This duality explains its frequent use in environments where secular rule and spiritual authority intersect. Vyšehrad, as one of the oldest centers of power and spirituality in the Czech state, is precisely the place where the griffin belongs.

The griffin is also a guardian of treasures, especially gold. It protects royal power as well as the seat itself.
