The legends are especially alive in Ireland, the Orkney Islands, the Shetland Islands, the Hebrides, and the Faroe Islands. Selkie – in Gaelic selchidh – translates as seal. Selkies live in the sea as seals. When they remove their skin (seal coat), they become human on land. If a Selkie loses her seal skin, she cannot return to the sea. Stories often repeat the motif of a fisherman who finds and hides the coat, and the Selkie becomes his wife. These women are excellent homemakers, but their minds are drawn back to the depths where they were free. If a Selkie finds her coat, she returns to the sea and leaves even her family behind. You may recognize them as women who spend hours gazing out of the window at the sea.

The design matured in the mind of Katien, the author of the design, for a long time. Especially during travels along the coasts of Ireland and Scotland, where ancient legends written into the landscape still speak. The word Selkie can also be heard from locals, who speak of these seal-skin women as real beings, much like the Banshee. Where the rocky land sinks into the ocean waves, an entirely different world begins, often hidden from human eyes.

You can also get Selkie earrings in the shape of ocean waves to match the necklace.
