Legends are especially alive in Ireland, the Orkney Islands, Shetland, the Hebrides, and the Faroe Islands. Selkie – in Gaelic selchidh – means seal. Selkies live in the sea as seals. When they shed their skin (seal coat), they become human on land. If a Selkie loses her skin, she cannot return to the sea. Stories often repeat the motif of a fisherman who finds and hides the coat and marries the Selkie. These women are excellent homemakers, but in their minds they long for the depths where they were free. If a Selkie finds her coat, she returns to the sea and leaves her family. You can recognize them as women who often spend hours gazing out of the window at the sea.
The jewelry design matured over a long time in the minds of Krak and Katien, the author of the design. Especially during journeys along the coasts of Ireland and Scotland, where old legends are embedded in the landscape. The word Selkie can be heard from local people, who speak of these women in seal skins as real beings, much like Banshees. Where the rocky landscape plunges into ocean waves, another world begins, often hidden from human eyes.
