Expertly crafted etched shepherd’s axe with motifs from Transcarpathia.

The shepherd’s axe is a mountain axe associated with the shepherd culture of the Carpathians, especially in regions of Ukraine, Slovakia, Moravia, and Poland. It serves not only for woodworking but also as support when walking in steep terrain and as a means of personal protection. Its slender, slightly curved blade allows for precise work, while the long handle provides good reach and stability.

The metal head is often decorated with engravings or etching featuring folk motifs that carry regional symbolism.

The shepherd’s axe is associated with brigands. Armed with these axes, they robbed their lords and also used them in dance. The shepherd’s axe of the most famous Slovak brigand, Juraj Jánošík, was believed to be magical.
