The Wheel of the Year represents the cyclical nature of time – the constant succession of growth, harvest, dormancy and the return of life. The sun at the centre of the design refers to the natural rhythm of the year, while the surrounding plant motifs symbolically depict the transformation of nature from spring through winter.
The hare was a distinctive and multifaceted symbol in medieval culture. Due to its fertility, it could be associated with vitality, reproduction and the renewal of life. At the same time, hares frequently appeared in medieval manuscripts and their marginal illustrations – known as marginalia – where they could take on humorous, fantastic or inverted meanings. Hares sometimes appear behaving like humans, hunters or even warriors, becoming part of the characteristically medieval idea of a “world turned upside down”.
The T-shirt design freely draws on this tradition. Four hares running around the sun form a dynamic circle and, together with vines, leaves, flowers, fruits and grain, evoke the eternal cycle of nature.
