Ammonitea bronze pendant inspired by one of the world’s most famous fossils . Ammonites were extinct cephalopods related to today’s nautiluses, which inhabited the world’s oceans approximately 400 to 66 million years ago. Thanks to their spiral shells, they have become important indicators for geologists in determining the age of rocks, but they had already fascinated ancient civilizations. Ancient scholars did not know their origin, yet they valued these unusual fossils and collected them.

In medieval Europe, ammonites were known as “snake stones.” According to legend, Saint Hilda of Whitby turned them into petrified snakes to drive snakes from her monastery. In various parts of Europe, ammonite fossils were regarded as talismans that brought protection, good luck, and prosperity. People kept them in their homes, wore them as amulets, or placed them in fields to protect their crops. The spiral shape of the ammonite became a symbol of eternity, renewal, the cycle of life, and humanity’s connection to the Earth’s ancient history.
