Odontochile is one of the most famous and sought-after genera of trilobites. These marine arthropods lived during the Devonian period around 400 million years ago, when much of present-day Europe was covered by warm shallow seas. Trilobites are among the world’s most recognizable fossils and represent an important record of the early evolution of life on Earth.
Fossils of the genus Odontochile are especially well known from the present-day Czech Republic, particularly from the Barrandian area, one of Europe’s most significant paleontological regions. Beautifully preserved specimens discovered there are highly valued by collectors and scientists worldwide. Important trilobite discoveries also come from Morocco, which is today one of the world’s leading sources of fossils.
Trilobites inhabited prehistoric oceans for more than 270 million years, during which thousands of different species evolved. Their bodies were divided into three longitudinal sections, which is where the name trilobite originates. Their distinctive segmentation, compound eyes, and highly detailed exoskeleton make trilobites some of the most fascinating fossils ever discovered.
Thanks to their unique appearance, trilobites have become a popular motif in jewelry, decorations, and collectible items.
