Odontochile is one of the most famous and sought after genera of trilobites. These marine arthropods lived during the Devonian period approximately 400 million years ago, when much of what is now Europe was covered by warm, shallow seas. Trilobites are among the most famous fossils in the world and represent important evidence of the ancient evolution of life on Earth.
Fossils of the genus Odontochile are known mainly from the territory of the present-day Czech Republic, especially from the Barrandien area, which is one of the most important palaeontological sites in Europe. It is here that beautifully preserved specimens have been found, prized by collectors and scientists worldwide. Important trilobite finds have also come from Morocco, which is now one of the world's largest sources of fossils.
Trilobites inhabited the primordial oceans for over 270 million years, and thousands of different species arose during this era. Their body was divided into three longitudinal parts, from which they got their name. The typical segmentation, compound eyes and detailed shell make trilobites some of the most attractive fossils ever found.
Thanks to their appearance, trilobites have become a popular motif in jewellery, decorations and collectibles.
