The replica of the Celtic tetradrachm is based on coins produced in Central Europe during the Late Iron Age. The relief of the animal and the stylized lines correspond to the way the Celts took ancient designs and transformed them into their own artistic language. The coin is cast in zinc and plated, giving it a natural and slightly aged appearance.

  • Material zinc

The Celtic tetradrachm of the MACCIUS type is one of the important coinage of the Latin period, dating from around the 1st century BC. These coins represent a local adaptation of Greco-Macedonian designs, especially those of Philip II, with the Celtic treatment of the motifs gradually taking on a distinctly abstract character. On the obverse there is usually a stylised head, on the reverse usually a rider on horseback accompanied by symbols and the inscription MACCIUS, the meaning of which is not clearly interpreted - it may be a mintmaster, a ruler or a family name. Tetradrachms served not only as currency, but also as a prestigious medium of exchange, often deposited in treasures or used in trade contacts with the Mediterranean world.

Celtic coin of Bratislava type; on the obverse a fallen warrior is depicted being devoured by a wild dog or wolf, on the reverse a snake with a ram's head.
