The Moravian eagle, red and white chequered on a blue field, has been documented since the first half of the 13th century. The oldest known use is related to the reign of Přemysl Otakar I and the Moravian margraves of the Přemyslid family. The original form of the eagle was golden, but around 1233 a checkerboard pattern of red and silver appeared, which subsequently became established as the coat of arms of Moravia. In the 14th century, the emblem was confirmed in the provincial privileges and appears in the seals of the margrave, on charters and in armorial books.
In the following centuries, its appearance changed only slightly - mostly in the details of the crowning and the shape of the wings. In the Middle Ages it was depicted on the banners of the provincial cash, city signs and coins. In the 19th century it became part of the provincial emblem of the Austrian Empire and later of Czechoslovakia as the historical heraldic sign of Moravia.
