This Turkish Kilij features a blade forged from 1065 high carbon steel and showcases the traditional T-section spine geometry. This design strengthens the back of the blade, increases rigidity, and at the same time reduces the weapon’s weight. Toward the tip, the T-section broadens into the yalman, which enhances cutting power in this wide part of the blade.
The crossguard and grip fittings are made of brass, while the grip itself is carved and polished wood. A pre-drilled hole allows for attaching a tassel or sword knot. The blade is firmly riveted directly into the wooden grip halves, ensuring a very solid construction.
The scabbard is handcrafted from wood, covered in black leather, and fitted with brass fittings and suspension rings.
The Kilij originates from the Turko-Mongol sabers used by the horsemen of the steppes and the Caucasus. Through trade and warfare, the Turkish version of this saber spread to Persia and Arabia.
By the end of the 15th century, the Kilij evolved into a distinctly Turkish saber.
This type of saber was primarily used by the Janissaries of the Ottoman Empire.
