Fils de Loki, il est jeté par Odin dans les océans et il grandit jusqu'à entourer la terre et mordre sa queue. Durant le Ragnarök, il se battra contre Thor. C'est un des exemples d'Ouroboros, symbole du temps cyclique.

According to Norse mythology Jörmungandr, or Midgardsormr, meaning gigantic beast, poses a great threat so Odin throws him into the ocean. But the serpent grows so large that it is able to surround the earth and grasp its own tail. During Ragnarök the beast causes a deluge resulting in submersion of the world. Afterward, the world resurfaces anew.
