Thistle (lat. Carduus), also known as Alba. This plant is the national flower of Scotland, formerly known as Caledonia.
Legend tells of a Danish cavalry that came to attack a Scottish castle. The attack was to take place at night, quietly and unexpectedly. When the soldiers began to cross the moat barefoot, they discovered too late that it was not water, but thistles. They were betrayed and failed. The thistle thus depicts the grit and determination of the Scottish Highlanders.
