Plate gloves were an integral part of the armour of knights and warriors in the Middle Ages. They were used to protect the hands and wrists from slashing and stabbing attacks during combat. They were most often made of steel plates, which were joined together to allow sufficient finger mobility, but at the same time provide a high level of protection. Especially in the 14th and 15th centuries, a type of so-called "hourglassgauntlets" became widespread, which had a typical hourglass-like extension at the wrist. This shape provided greater protection without restricting mobility. The gloves were often stuffed or worn over cloth or leather gloves for comfort. They were used not only in combat, but also in tournaments where the emphasis was on aesthetics and decoration. Today, historical replica cloth gloves are popular among fans of re-enactment, LARP and historical fencing.
