- Merovingian bird brooch, bronze
Reproduction of Merovingian bird type brooch. This faithful reproduction is based on an early medieval Bavarian brooch from the Merovingian period.
The original disc brooch was solidly cast in partially gilded silver and was 4.6 cm in diameter and 0.4 cm thick.
The historical model was found in Aschheim in southern Germany and dates from around 600 AD.
The decoration featured four swirling heads of birds of prey looking to the left with garnet inlaid eyes, flanked by four necks decorated with braided bands. From the 5th to the early 7th century, disc brooches combined with brooches were a characteristic part of the garment.
- Measurements of the Merovingian brooch: 4,6 cm.
