MILITARY TECHNICAL DICTIONARY English-Czech and Czech-English

This dictionary was printed in London during World War II for the use of Czechoslovak soldiers who participated in the British armed forces in the Allied struggle against Nazi Germany. It was published in 1942 by the Study Section of the Ministry of National Defence. The dictionary was intended to help Czechoslovak soldiers quickly find their way around and learn English military terminology when they had already mastered standard colloquial English. No edition was given, but there are certainly not many surviving copies. This led us to the idea of publishing this unique language handbook in a reprint, primarily also because it might serve today's translators of military-historical literature in better understanding the professional terminology of the time, but also in orienting them to the military abbreviations, ranks and units of the standing British Army of the time. The strength of this glossary lies, among other things, in the fact that it covers areas for which we still do not have enough good quality language reference books. Conventional AJ-CJ/CJ-AJ dictionaries focus on the military only marginally and often inaccurately. This WWII glossary focuses on terms current at the time, of course, but many of these terms are still valid today and were valid before. For example, technical terms are covered very well and clearly. This is a treasure not only for English translators specializing in the WWII period, but for the large community of anyone interested in modern Anglo-American military history. And this is true even in this day and age, when it seems that the internet can answer most questions instantly - a fallacy that often has an unpleasant effect on the quality of translations into English. This is a unique World War II-era language manual that has not lost its relevance to this day.

The dictionary includes English-Czech military abbreviations, military equipment diagrams, British Army ranks and a list of infantry regiments.
