Ragnarok, " Destruction of the Gods", is the name given by the Norse to the end of their mythical cycle, during which the universe is destroyed and then recreated. The word Ragnarok is a bit of a pun, its alternative, Ragnarøkkr, means "Dawn of the Gods".

In preparation for this event, the god Odin has chosen the most skilled human warriors to join him in a final battle against the world-eating monsters. The scene in this painting depicts Thor battling the sea monster Midgardsormr, which would eventually cause a worldwide flood and inundation of all land. A new and reborn world then emerges.
