The model for this hand-forged firesteel comes from an early medieval find - grave 18 from the Bavarian burial ground in Mockersdorf. In the 8th to 10th centuries there was a transition area between Slavic and Germanic settlements.
According to Wolfgang Zessin's typology, the heart-shaped steel from Mockersdorf is referred to as the Pirin type after the Bulgarian find.
- Size: 8,5 x 3,5 x 0,5 cm.
The early medieval firesteel is large enough for a woman to insert her fingers into it and protect them from the sharp edge of the flint.
The best tinder for the sharpener is dried birch mushroom, which is a bit ragged, as well as the inside of a burr and fine birch paper. For flint, of course, use that found along the German Baltic coast.
