Parisian Pavise

Paris was the most populous city in the Christian world during the High and Late Middle Ages (before a series of plague epidemics in the mid-14th century, it was said to have 200,000 inhabitants) and also the capital of one of the most powerful European kingdoms - France. During the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), Paris was heavily tested: as the residence of the French kings, it had to face attacks by the English, and at the beginning of the 15th century, it found itself in the midst of an internal conflict between the so-called Armagnacs and Burgundians, when the Burgundians, as fresh allies of the English, occupied Paris in 1418 and from 1420 the English took control of it. The Parisians then had to support them in the fight against the forces of the French king, as was the case in 1429 in the so-called "Battle of the Herrings." The capital could only stand again by the side of the French king when Charles VII regained control over Paris in 1436.

Whether the militias of Parisian burghers went to fight for the French or for the English king, they usually went into battle as infantry equipped with pole weapons, bows, and crossbows. Especially for crossbowmen, infantry shields, pavises, which protected them while reloading, were essential. The pavises of Parisian crossbowmen undoubtedly also bore the colors and coat of arms of the city, which was a common practice for medieval cities across Europe.

The coat of arms of Paris with the motif of a ship has been known since the 13th century. The execution used for our pavise corresponds to the Parisian coat of arms used since 1358 onwards.
